Dear Parents:
We have planned a special treat for our first graders!
Author Karen Beil is coming to Heatly on Wednesday, May 23rd to read
and sign her book, Mooove Over! A Book about Counting by Two’s, and talk with our first grade class. This event is designed to launch your first-grader into a summertime of fun which will enhance reading, writing, and math skills and make for an easy transition into second grade. Karen Beil’s book makes math fun with a hilarious story that children will want to read over and over, each time deepening their understanding of the concept of counting by two’s. Games and activities at the back of the book can extend the learning all summer long. What’s the story? The Countingtown Trolley is ready to roll. Animals climb on while the driver counts his passengers. But wait a minute! How can the driver keep his count straight if that crazy cow cuts in line?
The Little Bookhouse of Stuyvesant Plaza in Albany is generously offering a 20% discount off the retail price of $16.95, and the final cost will only be $13.56! Once the forms are returned, Mrs. Goss will order the books so they are here and waiting on the day of the visit!

Mrs. Goss and Heatly Library Awarded SLS Grant!

On December 11th, Mrs. Goss was awarded the School Library System Grant for the amount of $1500. This money will be used to update the collection and provide resources to be used during a collaborative project with Mrs. Kirch.

The collaborative unit will be designated to 4th and 5th grade science of the living environment. This unit will encourage students to research and investigate the Hudson River and it’s environment. Using materials aquired through the grant, students will use up-to-date publications to research different aspect of the river such as animal life, plant life, and pollution. . Students will be fully involved in the research of Hudson River water, and after extracting water samples, members of the New York Water Environment Association will address students on the contents of the water, and the effect this has on the environment and the community. Students will also graph and synthesize information such as temperature and tide measurements, which will test their understanding of information literacy strategies by using them for real life purposes.

This collaborative unit will begin when the new resources are received in September 2007. Mrs. Goss and Mrs. Kirch look forward to working together on this new and exciting unit!!

Research in the Library - 2nd Graders learn first hand about the Appalachian Trail

normclass.jpg

While looking for an interesting research project to engage her students, Mrs. Goss was presented with a unique and “once in a lifetime learning activity”.  It just so happens that Mrs. Goss’s friend Chris, and his brother James were about to start a 3-month hiking expedition following the northern section of the Appalachian Trail. Why not get the class involved and “follow” Chris & James’s adventure? What followed has been nothing short of wonderful. Combined with Mrs. Butler and Ms. Vincent’s 2nd grade classes, Mrs. Goss and her students have been researching the Appalachian Trail, noting different animals that they may encounter and different towns and historical sites along the way.

Each week Mrs. Goss and the students write a letter to Chris informing him of anything he might find interesting and asking any questions they may have about his adventures. Students will also be packing a “care package” every week which will include the essential items Chris needs to survive. Students will refer to a “checklist” to make sure they have packed everything that is necessary and will also include fun things, such as crossword puzzles.

On May 2, Chris came in to talk to the 2nd graders and show them the equipment he would be using for the next 3 months. As he demonstrated the equipment, he let some kids try on his gear and walk around with his backpack! At the end of Chris’s visit there was a question and answer discussion in which many wonderful questions were asked. As he left, Chris told me that he is extremely excited to stay in contact with the students and not to forget to send him letters!

If you are interested in accompanying Chris on his journey, please see the bulletin board next to the library for updated photos & letters from the Appalachian Trail!
